Title Official City Flag of Detroit
Description Original sketch of the flag of the City of Detroit, by David E. Heineman. The flag includes a central oval-shaped field containing image of the city seal representing the 1805 fire, and subsequent rebuilding, surrounded by four fields representing the kingdoms and nations which have claimed the city. The white field of five fleurs-de-lis at the lower left represents France under the House of Bourbon. The red field containing three lions passant at the upper right represents Great Britain. The blue field of stars at the upper left, and stripes at the lower right represent the United States. The sketch is captioned, "Official City Flag of Detroit." "Return to J.J. Haarer, Commissioner of Public Works, Detroit," is handwritten in the top border. "The original sketch, from which the first flag was made, by David E. Heineman," is handwritten in the lower left. The sketch is mounted to a cardstock backing.
