Description Black and white photographic print of the Father Gabriel Richard historic marker, prior to it being affixed and dedicated in 1951; the marker reads, "In A Farm House Near This Spot, FATHER GABRIEL RICHARD Founded the first book publishing establishment in Michigan in 1809. This great spiritual leader and humanitarian had a consuming zeal for education. Significantly the first book published by Father Richard's press was a child's spelling book. From his press came Michigan's first newspaper, 'The Michigan Essay,' many books and pamphlets. Part of the building housing the press was used as a school. In 1817, Judge Augustus B. Woodward, the Reverend John Montieth, Father Richard and Governor Lewis Cass founded the University of Michigan. The innumerable public services of Father Richard form a proud part of Detroit's rich heritage. This tablet presented to the city of Detroit, on July 11, 1951, by the J.L. Hudson Company under the auspices of the Detroit Historical Society."
