Description | Black and white photographic print of the excavation of Fort Lernoult; Dr. Arnold Pilling, Wayne State University, holds a Revolutionary War era flag, with Donald Morgan at the excavation site. Typed on the verso, "Wayne State University archeologists have been working in the very shadows of the new 26-story Detroit Bank & Trust building in downtown Detroit where remains of the 183-year-old Fort Lernoult were recently discovered. Shown looking at a replica of the 15-star American flag that was flown over the old fort when it was surrendered by the British after the Revolutionary War, is Dr. Arnold Pilling, who is directing the excavation, and four-year-old Donald Morgan. Donald is a great-great-great-great grandson of Captain Moses Porter, the American officer who raised the flag over the fort. The excavated post can be seen rising above the flag. Dr. Pilling has marked the various strata of earth and debris that covered the remains of the fort." |
