Description | Print. Black and white photographic print depicting a group of Wayne County AFSCME members marching in the 1955 Labor Day parade along Woodward Avenue. The group is primarily composed of women in white dresses, although there are several men wearing dark pants, white shirts, and black ties. A man at the front of the group carries a standard with the AFSCME symbol. Two other men on either side carry American flags. Signs reading, "Psychiatric Attendants Safety is being Jeopardized by Help Shortage," "We Want Full Seniority Rights," "One Attendant Alone with 45 Mental Patients," "Good Working Conditions Make Good Workers," and "Employee Morale... Low!," are peppered throughout the group. The photo was taken from a vehicle or float in front of the group in the parade, south of Elizabeth Street, and an arm supporting two lights is in the foreground. The Palms Theater, the Fox Theatre, the Elwood Bar, St. John's Episcopal Church, the Hotel Detroiter, and billboards advertising Stroh's beer and ice cream, Basinger General Tires Incorporated, Pfeiffer's, Life Savers candy, and Budweiser. A crowd is gathered along the sidewalk. "Group of AFSC-Wayne County, Wayne County Applauded," and "Local 25 - 1955 Labor Day,' are handwritten on the verso. |
